Santa Fe Impact structure
Recently these shatter cones were discovered by accident. A retired petroleum geologist was out walking his dog near a mud slide that was blocking the road. He went after his dog and noticed him standing by a dislodged rock that had the telltale signs of a shatter cone. As he looked at the cliff face he saw a shatter cone over 1 meter tall!
I had to opportunity to collect some of these wonderful structures. Unfortunately we can only get sections as most are 1/2 to 1 meter long. The material is not very fine grained which prevents the text book looking shatter cones you see in limestone. This material is mostly a micaceous schist.
