Meteorite fall in Krishnagiri District

Meteoroids are debris remaining from the Nebula in which the Solar System formed 4.6 billion years ago. Meteoroids are small chunks of stone or stone and iron, some which are fragments of asteroids or comets. Meteoroids range in size from tiny dust particles to objects of more than 10 meters across.

If Meteoroids enters the Earth atmosphere, it is heated by the friction excerted with the atmosphere and appears as a glowing streak of light called a METEOR or SHOOTING STAR. Most meters burn up in the atmosphere. The few that are large enough to reach the Earth’s surface are termed as METEORITES.

On 12.09.2008 Meteorites falls were observed from the Northwest direction of the sky at Addagurikki Village, Rauthapalli Village, Gangapuram Village and A.Kottur Village of Hosur Taluk in Krishnagiri District. The strewn field where these meteorites had fallen in elliptical in shape and it measures 3 KM along NW-SE direction 1 KM across. Nine pieces of meteorites were recovered by the Revenue authorities of Krishnagiri District and handed over to the concerned authorities arrived from the Geological Survey of India, Chennai for further research and analysis.
